Anyone else having second thoughts about staying in this field with everything going on in politics?

As I mentioned above, I’m really considering stepping away from social media, but it’s how I make a living (I freelance).

I’m not looking for advice on just pushing through, I’m more interested in hearing from others who might be in the same situation and how you’ve been dealing with it?

Social media isn’t the only way to make a living. I grew my copywriting business using cold emails and paid masterminds—not social media. I haven’t posted in over 10 months, and it’s been amazing.

I would love to hear more about your cold email strategy.

I’m happy to share what’s worked for me. Send me a DM, and we can either chat or exchange messages. I’m not trying to sell anything, I just enjoy connecting with others in the field.

I’d love to chat and swap stories. The burnout is real, sending you a DM now!

Let’s connect, Andrew! I’d love to have a conversation too.

Social media has always been a mess. Trying to keep up with it over time can really wear you down. Make sure your career includes a plan to grow and learn other marketing skills, so you don’t get stuck in this never-ending mess.

I have a degree in this field, but I’m doing something completely different now. You’re definitely not alone. The current political climate is tough, and it can feel even worse for those handling social media who have to navigate this mess daily.

My worries are more about job security and things like AI and automation. I’ve been thinking about switching careers for a couple of years now.

I get how you feel. Social media is essential for freelancers but can feel overwhelming with all the politics. Setting boundaries, like limiting your exposure to political content, can help protect your mental health. You could also work on growing your brand without diving into politics, or try diversifying your income streams. Balance is key.

You can take a break from social media if you need to, it won’t affect your work. I’ve run social media strategies for huge companies throughout my career. I didn’t post on my personal accounts for years (other than on Reddit and LinkedIn). It hasn’t hurt my career at all.

Look at it this way: it’s a business, not personal. That’s the mindset you need.

I totally get this, and I’m surprised more people aren’t talking about it. Social media has always been chaotic, but now it feels like more people are leaving all at once. This is new ground for us all. And I really don’t want to hear millennials bragging about how they survived the MySpace days—this is not the same thing.

Maybe try picking up new skills that can boost your credentials and job options while also improving your social skills.

I walked away from social media. There are other ways to make a living. I’ve always loved art and marketing, and now I focus on that, but in different ways. No regrets.

Can you tell me more? I also love art and creativity.

Is there another social media platform in digital marketing you’d like to explore? Or even a supporting skill that’s not directly related to digital marketing? I’ve stepped away from it a few times and always learned something new. Each time, I’ve come back to digital marketing with more wisdom and direction. Don’t be afraid to leave if you don’t love it.

Honestly, the best advice is to diversify your skills. Never rely on just one client, platform, or project. Blogs and email marketing are going to stick around for a while. It’s always a good idea to take a few courses every year.

I totally feel this…
