As a marketer, especially if you’re a social media manager, how do you strike a balance with your social media use?
I’m finding it tough to manage my social media usage for work. Staying up-to-date with trends and features is crucial, but the more I engage, the more I feel hooked, unhealthy, and sometimes pressured by peers.
On the other hand, not staying engaged makes me worry about missing key updates that could affect my work. It’s getting harder to separate personal time from work time.
For those in similar roles, how do you stay informed and use social media effectively without letting it take over your life? I’d appreciate any tips or strategies you might have.
Create a separate account specifically for work. Follow only relevant channels and train the algorithm to avoid content that’s unrelated or distracting.
Try using this affirmation each morning before you start your day; it’s best to write it down:
“Today, I am clear, focused, and organized. I plan my day, tasks, and energy usage. Each task has its time and place, and I work with structure and clarity. I work in batches, plan ahead, and use my time effectively. My work is strategic and purposeful, and I stay focused on what matters. Social media is a tool for work, not a distraction. I post with intention and then leave the platform to protect my energy. I am here to create, not consume. My time is valuable, and I use it mindfully.”
I read this 4-5 times a day to keep myself on track.
This is a great post. Personally, I limit my social media engagement to management software and use Buffer for all interactions. I avoid browsing social media on my phone to prevent developing an addiction beyond work. Instead, I use a web browser to view posts. I also follow only news-related accounts on the platforms to stay updated on the latest trends. Lastly, I try not to engage with posts on my personal accounts to keep the algorithm neutral. If I like something, I’ll screenshot it or copy the link for later viewing.
It’s challenging. What helps me is using separate accounts for work and personal use, and being selective about who I follow on my work accounts. However, staying up-to-date with trends while avoiding the more addictive content can still be tough.
From my perspective, it’s important to set aside some personal time away from social media and engage in activities you enjoy, like reading. (By the way, reading is a great way to focus, practice patience, and enjoy some relaxing, healthy downtime.) Read whatever interests you, even if it’s children’s magazines…
Another tip: try to slow down and enjoy the small moments in your day, like enjoying your breakfast.
