Is a Digital Marketing Master's Degree Worth It?

I’m curious to hear from those who’ve completed a master’s in digital marketing, how was your experience? Was the investment of time and money really worth it? What kind of insights or skills did you actually gain? Would you recommend it to someone considering this path? Let’s talk about whether a digital marketing master’s degree truly makes a difference.

Never pursue a degree in digital marketing.

But why, though? Is it really that pointless?

From my experience, marketing instructors struggle to keep their curriculum in sync with the fast-paced changes in the industry. That’s why professionals in the field often emphasize the importance of hands-on work experience and achievements like “xxx% ROI” or managing “$x,xxx, xxx budget” campaigns. These accomplishments hold much more weight in an interview than a degree from educators who can’t stay on the cutting edge because they’re too busy teaching.

Makes sense. Do you have any recommendations for a master’s program that you think is actually worthwhile?

I don’t have any recommendations, unfortunately. Sorry about that.

Alright, thanks anyway.

Hey, I completed a master’s in marketing, and honestly, it wasn’t worth it! Like someone mentioned earlier, an MBA is a solid choice, but it’s also quite expensive. I would definitely recommend focusing on a quantitative course like business analytics or something in data science. These types of courses can open doors much faster than a marketing master’s.

You could then aim for roles like web analyst, programmatic ads analyst, marketing operations, CRM analyst, and other analyst positions.

I’m not sure what your ideal marketing career looks like, but these roles are really valuable for getting started. The course will provide you with enough depth that, combined with some experience, you can eventually move into any role you want.

Could you let me know which university you did your master’s at? I’m planning to start in spring 2024.

Hey, sorry for the late reply. Can you DM me instead? I’d prefer not to share personal details that could lead to doxxing.

In any advertising or marketing industry, on-the-job experience is far more valuable than post-graduation coursework.
