Where should I start with digital marketing…?

I’ve managed a team of 8 full-time marketers, and here’s what helped:

  1. YouTube has a lot of great marketing channels.

  2. We also bought some courses from Udemy that were really helpful.

  3. Sign up for newsletters and blogs from industry experts.

  4. Practice what you learn on real projects, even if you start by helping out a friend’s business.

  5. Join communities like this one to network with other marketers.

I wouldn’t recommend buying books, though. The industry changes too fast, so stick to online content unless you’re learning basic concepts.

What newsletters and blogs would you recommend?

@Jordan Could you share some specific YouTube channels and newsletters?

A good way to start is by learning the basics of SEO, social media, and email marketing. Google Digital Garage and HubSpot offer free courses. You can also practice by creating content on social media or starting a blog. As you grow more confident, look at freelance platforms like Fiverr or Upwork to find small jobs and build experience.

Only the top marketers make big money. Average ones don’t make much. I run an agency, and while we’ve been successful, it took a lot of luck along the way. Many people try and fail.

If you really enjoy this field, stick with it, but be ready for a tough road ahead.

It’s rough out there! Only those who really love it make it through.

You don’t just ‘start’ doing digital marketing. First, you need to learn and then figure out what will make you stand out from the crowd. It’s not enough to know a bit about it—you need a unique selling point. And just know that pay is pretty low for beginners without a portfolio.

I’d suggest taking some free online courses and webinars. Semrush Academy has great resources for SEO, and HubSpot’s courses are good for learning social media marketing. Google Digital Garage is also worth checking out.

Focus on building a well-rounded skill set, and keep practicing on real projects.

Start with the basics on platforms like Google Digital Garage or HubSpot Academy. Focus on SEO, social media, content, and PPC.

As you gain more knowledge, specialize in one area and test strategies on your own website or blog. Use tools like Google Analytics to track your progress, and try finding small gigs on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr to build a portfolio.

Instead of diving into a ton of videos, try talking to someone who’s been in the field for the last 6 months to a year. They can give you the latest insights and guide you on where to focus your learning.

Do you actually know anything about marketing?

I do have some experience in marketing and I’m just trying to learn how digital marketing works.
