Pick up writing. It is the foundation. and learn how to use Google Analytics. Keep an eye on the frameworks as they change (e.g., strategies). Keep up with industry leaders on Linkedin and Twitter to understand that everyone is experimenting.
The only thing your friend has is data. You are the guru if your ideas are successful. Read a great deal. Join newsletter subscription services to continue learning and applying concepts. It is an aptitude. Some fundamentals define the ideal digital marketer but not by any set of rules. Success is determined by the numbers.
