How do you begin freelance digital marketing?

It may seem annoying, but having friends who run small businesses can be really beneficial. I started by doing some organic social media work and a bit of paid advertising for friends to build up a small portfolio. Then, I found another client through Upwork but worked off the app to avoid their high fees. I kept at it for about 6-7 months, earned some certificates along the way, and eventually had enough experience to apply to an agency.

Freelancing in digital marketing is pretty cool. First, learn a marketing skill, think social media pro or email master. Free courses online can help you pick one. You can help a local shop or a friend’s business with their online stuff, this builds your skills and shows you’re awesome!
Then finally spread the word on social media or even put up flyers that you are ready and open for business. It’s like being your own boss of cool online marketing stuff. You got this!

I can’t really answer since I’m in a different field, but I wanted to ask: how much do you think a small startup should budget for digital marketing? I’m starting a company in the kids’ gear space, and I have no idea how to budget for social media marketing. Specifically, I want to focus on genuine word-of-mouth content, like reaching out to small parenting influencers and having them review the product on Instagram and TikTok.
