New to digital marketing and need some advice

Hi everyone, I’m looking to start a career in digital marketing and would love some guidance.

A bit about me: I have a bachelor’s in business studies and six months of experience in marketing. Right now, I’m working as an assistant executive at a small valves company. I’m doing an online course that covers topics like WordPress, Canva, and Google Ads to build my skills.

I’d appreciate tips from those with experience. What’s the best way to get started and find opportunities? How can I stand out as a beginner?

Any advice or suggestions would mean a lot!

You’re off to a solid start! It’s great that you’re already learning. Here’s some advice:

  1. Pick an area you enjoy, like SEO, social media, or content marketing.
  2. Build a portfolio with small projects. Try running mock campaigns or helping friends with marketing.
  3. Network with others in the field. Forums like this one, LinkedIn, and Slack groups are great places.
  4. Freelance to gain experience and confidence. Platforms like Upwork or Fiverr can help you start.
  5. Keep learning! Follow blogs, watch videos, and try out tools like Google Analytics or SEMrush.

Stick with it and you’ll do great!

Thanks for the detailed tips. I’ll start applying these right away!

Just apply what you’re learning as soon as possible. It helps you gain experience and have something to show.

Turn your skills into an online business! I did that with my tax expertise and it’s been amazing.

Starting out can feel like a lot, but you’re on the right path!

My advice: offer help to small businesses or local brands. It’s real-world experience and builds your portfolio fast. Something that worked for me was reaching out to people directly on Instagram. It’s a great way to connect with potential clients or employers. If you want tips on how I did that, just ask!

Don’t stress too much—it’s awesome you’re starting fresh! Focus on what you enjoy most in digital marketing. Is it video ads? Social media? Build a personal project or portfolio to show what you can do. Keep learning and don’t hesitate to ask people in the industry for advice.

Start with free YouTube courses. They’re super helpful.

Honestly, I’d reconsider digital marketing as a career. Many of us didn’t choose it; we just ended up here.

The pay isn’t great compared to the skills you need, and senior roles often involve more office politics than marketing work. I’d suggest sticking with your current field and looking into engineering sales—it could be a better path.
