Thinking of switching from IT to social media… will my degree be enough or should I study something else?

Hi everyone, I’m studying IT right now but lately, I’ve been thinking about changing careers to social media management. My main goal is to be an actress, and I picked IT so I’d have something stable while trying to make it in acting. But I’m starting to feel like I don’t really enjoy coding that much and that I’d prefer working in social media.

I’ve been learning Photoshop and it’s getting easier, which is a good sign. But I wanted to ask—do you think an IT degree would be enough to get into social media management, or would it be better to also study something like marketing or communications?

For those of you already working in social media management, does this job let you have enough time to do other things like acting? I’m aware salary grows with experience, but do you think this career can also pay well enough to support me long-term?

Any advice or personal experiences would be awesome! Thanks!

Your IT degree can still be very helpful in social media because the tech side is really growing in importance—think data, SEO, and automation. Minoring in marketing or communications could definitely be a plus, but what’ll really stand out is having actual work experience, like internships or freelance gigs. Social media jobs often allow for flexible hours, especially if you go freelance, which could make it easier to balance with acting.

Thank you! It’s good to hear my IT degree could still be useful in social media management, especially with things like data analysis. I’ll focus on building a portfolio through internships or freelance work, but do you think there are any specific jobs I should look for to help me transition into social media? Or should I just start applying directly to social media management jobs?

No need to study anything extra. I’ve been doing social media for over 11 years and didn’t need any formal qualifications. Just get started and learn as you go.

I appreciate the straight-to-the-point advice! It’s really motivating to hear from someone who’s been successful without needing extra studies. I’ll definitely focus on hands-on experience to learn as I go.

Hey, I stumbled across an AI tool for SEO content that boosted my clicks like crazy—over 100k a month. It’s super helpful and you can try it free. Just look it up (seowriting .ai) but remove the spaces.
