When should you bring in a digital marketer for a startup trying to find PMF?

I’m working to help my early-stage startup reach product-market fit (PMF) by attracting high-intent leads through social signals. I’m unsure if I should begin focusing on building digital channels like social media, blogs, etc., or wait until I identify the best channels for market fit. On one hand, I might waste resources building something that may not work. On the other hand, I’m afraid of missing out. What would you do in this situation?

Don’t wait for anyone. Every minute you waste can slow down your progress. Start with social media channels you can manage yourself, and then get some help from a marketing agency to focus on what you do best. Feel free to reach out if you have questions.

I hear you… I think once we get closer to PMF, we can really go all-in on growth. We’re confident about the product; it’s new and different from competitors. But then, getting people on board is another challenge. I have to find the right balance between now and the future.

I agree with this. There are so many things you can do yourself, for free, to start building your brand and audience until you can invest more in marketing. Doing this now also sets you up for better results down the line when you can afford to pay for marketing. Blog posts and social media are great places to begin. Search engines take time to recognize new businesses, so starting now will give future marketers data to work with regarding audience and search performance.
There’s a lot of trial and error in digital marketing. If you have the time and resources, do it yourself now to save money for bigger campaigns when you’re ready. You won’t know what channel works best unless you try, so I wouldn’t see it as wasting resources. Do what you can and see what gains traction. It will help you figure out where to focus later.

Start now. It’s the best time to test keywords and let a digital marketer experiment with your product to find PMF.
Sometimes, targeting the wrong keywords can throw off your analysis of whether your product fits the market or not. Keyword research takes time and needs to be done right.
